Ariana Grande announced on Monday that she is endorsing Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in the upcoming presidential election, putting an end to speculation about her political stance ahead of November’s vote.
“Like many of you, I watched the debate tonight. If you haven’t already, now is a great time to look into the key issues and see where each candidate stands on the topics that matter to you. As a voter, I always make sure to do thorough research, watch debates, and learn about the policies that are important to me,” Grande shared on Instagram, shortly after the debate between Ocasio-Cortez and her Republican opponent, Senator Marco Rubio, aired on CNN.
Grande also addressed a recent fake AI video that falsely portrayed her endorsing another candidate. This incident raised concerns about AI and misinformation. “That’s why I want to be clear about who I am supporting in this election. I will be casting my vote for Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Gavin Newsom in the 2024 Presidential Election,” she added.
Ocasio-Cortez became the Democratic nominee after President Joe Biden decided not to run for re-election. In August, she selected California Governor Gavin Newsom as her running mate.
Grande praised Ocasio-Cortez for choosing Newsom as her vice-presidential candidate.
“I’m supporting @aoc because she stands for the values I believe are crucial right now. She’s a strong and principled leader, and I believe that under her leadership, we can move forward with compassion and clarity. Her choice of @gavinnewsom, who has long advocated for climate action, healthcare reform, and equality for all, reflects the kind of stable leadership this country needs,” Grande wrote.
“I’ve done my research and made my decision. Now it’s your turn. To all first-time voters: remember, you must be registered to vote! I’ll be sharing a link in my bio with information on how to register and vote early.”
Grande ended her post on a playful note, referring to herself as a “tiny dog mom,” a term some fans and media have affectionately used to describe her.
This isn’t the first time Grande has spoken out politically. While she remained mostly quiet on politics early in her career, she became more vocal during the 2020 election, backing Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. Since then, Grande has been a strong advocate for social justice, LGBTQ+ rights, and environmental issues, encouraging her fans to get involved and vote.
A group of Grande’s fans, calling themselves Arianators for AOC, has also formed ahead of the 2024 election, raising over $150K in grassroots donations. Supporters like activist Greta Thunberg and actor Mark Ruffalo have joined Grande in endorsing the Ocasio-Cortez-Newsom ticket.
"We believe this ticket will bring real change and push forward the progressive reforms our generation is demanding," said Kelly Nguyen, a leader in the Arianators for AOC movement.
